The effect of an amputation extends well beyond the loss of a limb itself, and effective Physiotherapy requires addressing addressing the nervous system and brain in addition to the effects on the Musculoskeletal system (joints, bones, muscles etc.).

Physiotherapy is heavily involved across all stages of Prosthetic Limb use.
Pre-Prosthetic: Physiotherapy is essential to maintain or improve muscle strength & stability, and joint mobility in preparation for the prosthetic fitting.
Prosthetic Fitting and Adjustment: During this stage, we collaborate closely with your prosthetist team when a limb is fitted, and adjustments are made for optimal comfort and functionality. During this stage, physiotherapy involves learn how to properly use the prosthetic, focusing on movement, balance, and gait training.
Prosthetic Training and Maintenance: This stage involves adapting to the prosthetic in daily life, with a strong focus on safety and falls prevention. Physiotherapy continues to improve strength and mobility, while regular maintenance ensures the prosthetic remains comfortable and functional for long-term use.

Losing a limb affects more than just the loss of it’s function. It permanently alters the body’s centre of gravity, requiring the body to alter it’s posture to rebalance itself. Over time this place increased postural strain on the body, not to mention the extra amount of work the remaining limbs must do during everyday tasks such as carrying, walking and doing household chores.
It’s no wonder that 90% of amputees report at least one source of Chronic Pain, with over 75% reporting pain in more than one area.

Chronic Pain caused from the loss of a limb can be equally as restrictive as loss of the limb itself. Amputee Physiotherapy uses an increasingly wide variety of treatment approaches to keep pain from preventing you doing the things you love, including;
