Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Physiotherapists are primarily involved in improving and maintaining your functional independence. The term has been coined ‘Mobility’ and is one of 6 NDIS Functional Domains
Large movement tasks such as getting in and out of a chair or a car, moving around in bed, walking around a shopping centre and use of mobility aids are all assessed in creating an accurate snapshot of how your condition is affecting how you move around.
An NDIS Physiotherapy Assessment (or Mobility Assessment) serves many purposes which are explored below.

Taking a holistic approach, an NDIS Physiotherapy Assessment aims to capture how disability impacts all aspects of your life. Including your social activities, parenting or family-based responsibilities, employment activities and the level of support you have to live life to it’s fullest.
Not every day is the same, so an assessment takes into account both the good days, and the challenging ones to gain an accurate snapshot of everything that makes your life unique. Â
A tailored assessment of your mobility is conducted including factors such as strength, endurance, balance and falls risks to gauge your level of independence with moving around.Â
Based on the findings of the assessment, we provide recommendations for improving the quality and safety of your mobility. These may include Physiotherapy-led exercise programs, hands-on treatments, manual handling recommendations for your family and support workers including any assistive technology that can assist you in becoming more independent.

By reviewing you plan in light of any assessment-based recommendations and goals to your plan, a comprehensive report is compiled containing the available evidence to support any reasonable and necessary improvements or changes to your plan. This typically occurs during a Plan Review or while gaining access to the NDIS itself.
The report aims to give NDIS planners a concise and accurate snapshot you your condition, goals, current level of support and justification for the supports requested. Â
NDIS planners (or delegates) are looking for all evidence and recommendation to fit into their “Reasonable and Neccessary” criteria, which includes:
By providing the best quality evidence in a concise manner, planners are better able to understand your unique situation, helping them in the decision making process.
