We don’t need to speak to someone with EDS/HSD for long to hear the challenges of navigating the health system with a rare condition. There are countless stories of encounters and emergency department visits, where lack of familiarity and understanding of their condition limited the care they received.Â
And in some unfortunate cases, caused additional harm.

These unfortunate incidents highlight the importance of having an experienced and dedicated multi-disciplinary team supporting those with EDS/HDS and their families as being the cornerstone of a successful long term partnership that improves quality of life. So much so that it was the theme of their recent Global Learning Conference in Brisbane.
Working with a Physiotherapist in your team that listens, understands, tailors and ‘tweaks’ your treatment plan through a long term partnership is crucial. From realigning and managing symptoms in the short term, to preventing flare ups and subluxations through guided exercise in the long term, the reality is that good multidisciplinary management plans take some time to develop and that adapts to your ever changing needs.Â
Manual therapy for joint alignment and muscle spasm
Self management techniques to optimise joint positioning.
Enhancing joint stability through evidence-based exercise to enhance proprioception reduce subluxation events and spinal alignment issues such as scoliosis and upper cervical instability that can affect levels of dysautonomia.
General strength exercises to restore function in everyday activities.Â
And all of the above, delivered carefully with acknowledgement of coexisting conditions (such as POTS, stenosis and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome)Â
