Very few things can turn life on its head like a Stroke can and for over 40,000 Australians last year, it did. The effects on a person’s independence can be devastating, and yet the astonishing ability of our brains to ‘rewire’ through neuroplasticity has resulted in some truly incredible stories of recovery.
The path to recovery is long, and fortunately improvements can be seen for years to come which highlights the importance of ongoing rehabilitation, of which Physiotherapy is a cornerstone. In fact, research has shown that the more active the involvement in Physiotherapy, the better the outcome.

Everyone’s brain injury is different, which kind of seems like an overuse phrase. But considering the brain is responsible for almost every single function that we can think of, the nature and level of disability experienced by those who have sustained a Stroke is incredibly diverse.
Physiotherapy treatment after a Stroke is primarily focused on improving independence with mobility, or ‘Gross Motor Function’. These are larger movement tasks such as walking, transferring, bed mobility and use of the upper limbs for everyday tasks. All of which can be significantly affected from a Stroke.

Physiotherapy utilises a broad spectrum of treatment approaches to improve your independence, including:
Restoring Strength and Balance by using engaging, goal-based rehabÂ
Hydrotherapy for gait retraining, strengthening and general cardiovascular fitness.
Improving coordination, spatial awareness and movement planning through complex movement exercises.
Assessing your mobility and planning with your family and other support to maximise your safety with movement.
Managing contractures through regular range of movement exercises and optimising bed and wheelchair positioning.

All our treatment options are highly adaptable to suit your goals and being mobile allows us to find the right environment to suit your individual needs.
If you’re more ‘aquatically inclined’ and like some Vitamin D, we have done sessions at the beach. Or if you’re sick of the four walls at home then there are some fantastic public gym facilities scattered throughout the parks of Brisbane. The possibilities are endless…
